A keyseater is actually a fairly simple machine, its designed to cut slots or keyways into workpieces which will ensure proper locking or positioning between two elements. Although a very specialized type of operation, it’s been around for a long time because it has proven to be the most efficient and easiest way to perform such a process. A similar process may also be accomplished by a vertical machining center or even an electrical discharge machine, but for more of a consistent volume of parts, the keyseater is still preferred.
Keyseaters can do more than just cut keyways, as the machine can also be used to cut grooves, internal profiles, and contours with the correct tooling. Shops will often turn to these machines if a standard sized broaching tool cannot get the job done, as tooling costs are lower. Besides lower cost, reduced time can also be achieved for a variety of different parts, such as anything with a motor, propeller/conveyor shafts, sprockets, pulls and even gears. A few major manufacturers we have extensive experience with include Davis, DCMorrison, Mitts&Merrill, Bliss, Hansford, Leistritz and many more
