Boring in general can be executed on a variety of different machining tools, which include general-purpose or universal machines, such as CNC lathes or simply milling machines. One such milling machine that is designed to specialize in boring as a primary function are boring mills, which include both a vertical boring mill, work piece rotates around a vertical axis while boring head moves linearly, and a horizontal boring mill, work piece sits on a table while the boring bar rotates around a horizontal axis.
Boring machines come in a large variety of styles as well as sizes. Boring operations on small products can be carried out on say a lathe milling machine while other larger products are specifically machined on boring mills. In most cases products are 3ft to 13ft diameter, but can be as large as 66 ft. Of course with such large products, power requirements can be upwards of 200 horsepower. However, the bores are cooled through a hollow passageway running through the boring bar where cold air coolant flows.
We here at Myers have sold and installed milling brands such as Giddings & Lewis, Wotan, TOS, Lucas, Union, Niles, Deawoo, Doosan, Newland, Kuraki, Bullard, You-ji, HNK, HonorSeiki, O-M, Toshiba, King, Summit and many more. We are familiar with them all and welcome your questions.
