MACHINE CONSTRUCTION
Rigid Meehanite cast iron bed construction on the Mighty Viper series of CNC turning centers provides the ultimate in machine tool accuracy and reliability. The 45 slant bed design with integrated torque tube ribbing, gives the Mighty Viper exceptional stability in heavy-duty cutting operations. The slant bed design also provides an optimal structure for efficient chip removal. Both X and Z axes on the Viper series of CNC turning centers are supported by oversized hardened and precision-ground box ways with fast rapid feedrates of 787 ipm for X axis and 945 ipm for Z axis.
HEADSTOCK AND SPINDLE
A fast, rigid and accurate spindle, the Viper spindle is housed in a cast iron headstock that is designed to easily handle the spindle drive capacity. The Viper’s headstock has thermal deformation prevention design for more accuracy. Utilizing the latest technology provided by Fanuc, the Viper uses Fanuc’s brushless spindle motor with dual winding to achieve its high and low torque ranges. This spindle design allows for flexibility for different feeds and speeds needed when cutting a variety of materials. The Viper’s spindle generates excellent surface finishes and extraordinary metal removal rates. High accuracy P4 grade angular contact thrust spindle bearings ensure precision turning during long-term operations. With a robust Ø3.4" through hole spindle diameter, the Viper series of CNC turning centers provides high rigidity with this accurate spindle.
AXIS DRIVE SYSTEM
The drive systems provide the axes with maximum radial torque through extremely accurate, zero backlash, and large diameter pre-tensioned double-nut ballscrews. Since the axes require high speed feed and reverse capability, the VT Series employs extremely accurate single pitch ballscrews. These ballscrews are preloaded and supported at both ends with bearing blocks, eliminating ballscrew whipping and torsional twisting, while increasing rigidity and ensuring smooth acceleration and deceleration rates.
Coupled between each axis drive motor and ballscrew is a mechanical torque limiting torsional clutch. When the torque load of the drive system exceeds the mechanical value, the clutch disengages the drive motor, protecting the integrity of the axis drive system.
TURRET
A large, rigid, high-speed, precision-ground turret indexing in 0.9 seconds from station to station and utilizing shortest path indexing, makes the Viper’s turret excellent for production machining. The turret is designed with 12 stations that accept various OD and ID tooling with minimal tool interference.
TOOL SETTER (OPTIONAL)
With the tool setter system, the Viper is an ideal machine for both short-run and high production environments. The tool setter reduces set-up time, speeds up changing tools and insures accurate and speedy measurement of tool offsets. The tool setter also allows for various checkpoints throughout the program to obtain optimal part accuracy and finish.
BALLSCREWS
Precise, robust ballscrews generates slide-way movement in both axes in the Viper Series of CNC turning centers. Using only the finest quality parts, both X and Z axes are driven by ultra-precise ballscrews that are preloaded and centered between the saddle ways and doubled anchored for optimum drive conditions.
PROGRAMMABLE TAILSTOCK
The highly rigid tailstock is ground matching perfectly to the headstock mounting surface, establishing an absolute alignment between the two. The heavy-duty tailstock is a two-piece modular design that reduces machine induced taper. Its center of gravity is in the horizontal plane, thus eliminating any taper in the workpiece. Tailstock body is positioned by a drive bar, which engages with the carriage. The drive bar and tailstock clamping are programmable, which allows for quick setups. The tailstock comes with a 4.3" diameter quill, MT-5 Morse Taper and a quill stroke of 3.9".
AUTOMATIC LUBRICATION
Automatic lubrication system is provided to all guideways, ballscrews and the tailstock quill. Lubrication monitoring system ensures complete lubrication by detecting any oil leakage and oil pressure reduction to avoid potential downtime problems.
CHIP REMOVAL
Proper chip removal is essential in maximizing metal removing conditions. The Viper’s 45º bed construction prevents chips from accumulating on the slides. With its standard link type chip conveyor, the Viper CNC turning centers allows for easy chip removal from the machine.
EASE OF OPERATION
The Viper VT-30G series has an ultra-compact control with network capability. It features a CNC printed circuit board integrated with an LCD monitor that enables Ethernet communication functions. The standard monitor is a 10.4" color LCD. In case of a failure, causes and recovery are displayed on the CNC display screen, in return enabling a more rapid recovery.
High speed PMC process sequence control is 2.5 times faster than FANUC’s previous control model. The program capability has been greatly expanded for sequence control of peripheral equipment enabling monitoring and editing functions to be incorporated to the CNC unit.
